1 March marked the start of the application process for the next edition of the folk music competition "Jawor - u źródeł kultury" (Jawor - at the sources of culture), organised by Polish Radio Olsztyn. For the fourth time, the most talented folk artists from Warmia and Mazury will present themselves before regional and national audiences.

The winners will be announced on 1 May this year during the regional final of the competition, which will be held in Lidzbark Warmiński during the Folk Culture Festival.

The idea of the competition
The folk music competition "Jawor - u źródeł kultury" is aimed at promoting the folk culture of the region and honouring Warmia and Mazury artists, creators and performers active in areas related to folk culture.

This competition is one of the most important events promoting the idea of nurturing native folklore, as well as an opportunity to honour and present the talent of our artists to a wider audience, and undoubtedly we have many such talented musicians and singers - says Leszek Sobański, President of Radio Olsztyn.

Four categories of the Competition
The Competition Committee, consisting of specialists in folk music and folklore, will select regional winners and award prizes in five categories:

• soloist (singer or instrumentalist)
• folk band or ensemble
• children's or youth folk ensemble
• folk artist (artistic handicraft).

Radio Olsztyn has provided the following prizes in each category of the Competition:

- for the 1st place during the regional final: a financial prize of PLN 2 000.00 gross

- for placing 2nd in the regional final: a financial award of PLN 1,500.00 gross

- for third place during the regional final: financial award of PLN 1 000.00 gross.

In addition, finalists in each music category will be offered a six-hour recording session in Radio Olsztyn's Pro Studio.

Representatives selected by the Competition Jury during the regional finals will perform at the nationwide "Jawor - u źródeł kultury" competition in Tokarnia on 18 June 2023.
